Your Privacy Choices

Your Privacy Choices

The short version

  • This page is about advertising and marketing, and about the data that goes with them. It is the page to use when you want us to stop.
  • Our site does not read the "Global Privacy Control" or "Do Not Track" signal that your browser can send. There is no code on this site that looks for either one. An earlier version of this page said we did. That was wrong, and this page replaces it.
  • In the United States and Canada, advertising runs on an opt-out basis. That is why there is no consent banner here, and why the request has to come from you.
  • The one route that reaches us is email: customer@myheritagestories.com, written from the address you used with us. We answer within 48 hours.
  • We can take you out of our marketing emails and out of the advertising audiences we control. We cannot delete what Meta, TikTok or Google already hold, and we cannot stop their cookies loading in your browser. The Cookie Policy has the settings that do that, platform by platform.
  • Opting out never affects an order, a report you already paid for, or the help you get from us.

1. What this page covers

This page covers your choices about advertising and marketing: our emails, the advertising cookies and pixels on the site, and the data those send to the advertising platforms we use.

Two related pages, so you do not read the wrong one:

  • For a copy of the personal information we hold, to correct it, or to have it deleted, see the Privacy Policy.
  • For the full list of the cookies on this site, what each one does, and the platform-by-platform settings, see the Cookie Policy.

2. We do not read Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track

Some browsers and browser extensions can send a signal to every site you visit — "Do Not Track" (DNT), or "Global Privacy Control" (GPC) — that asks the site not to share your data for advertising.

Our site does not detect or act on either signal. There is no code on it that reads them. If you have one switched on, it changes nothing here.

We would rather write that down than let you believe a switch is working when it is not. If we build automatic handling of GPC later, we will say so on this page and change the date at the bottom.

An earlier version of this page promised the opposite. It said we recognized GPC, and it pointed to instructions that were never there. That text came from a previous version of the site, it was not true of this one, and we have removed it. If you acted on it and thought you had opted out, you had not — please send the email in Section 4 and we will do it now.

3. Why there is no consent banner

The rules we sell under generally work on an opt-out basis for advertising: the tags load when a page opens, and you are entitled to tell us to stop. They do not require a site to ask permission first. So instead of a banner that most people click through without reading, we give you the routes below.

We do not sell your personal information for money. But several U.S. state privacy laws define "sale," "sharing" or "targeted advertising" broadly, and our use of Meta, TikTok and Google advertising cookies can fall inside those definitions. That is exactly the thing this page lets you switch off.

4. How to opt out with us

Write to customer@myheritagestories.com. Email is our only support channel — there is no phone line and no chat — and it is the only route that reaches a person here.

To make it quick:

  • Send it from the email address you used with us. That is how we find you: checkout is as a guest, so we have no account to look you up by.
  • If you never bought anything and only used the free surname search, use the address you typed into that form.
  • Say what you want, in your own words. "Stop sending me marketing emails," or "stop sharing my information for targeted advertising," or both.
  • If you want your data deleted as well, say that too, and read Section 9 first.

We handle these by hand. There is no automatic switch behind this page. You will get a reply within 48 hours telling you what we did.

Please do not send us ID documents or card numbers. If your email address does not match anything we hold, we will write back and ask you a question about your order rather than ask you to prove who you are.

5. What we can do when you ask

  • Take you out of our marketing emails. The unsubscribe link at the bottom of any marketing email does this at once; by email we do it by hand. Once you are off, we do not put you back on unless you sign up again yourself.
  • Take you out of the advertising audiences we control — the audiences we manage at the advertising platforms — and stop using your email address to build them from then on.
  • Give you a copy of your data, correct it, or delete it, through the Privacy Policy. The same address handles those requests.

6. What we cannot do — said plainly

  • We cannot delete what the platforms already hold. Meta, TikTok and Google keep their own records of what their tags saw. Only they can act on those. The Cookie Policy lists each company's own opt-out route, and those are worth using.
  • We cannot stop their cookies loading in your browser. That is done at your end — browser settings, a content blocker, or the industry opt-out tools in the Cookie Policy. Blocking only "third-party cookies" will not do it, because several of these are stored under our own domain.
  • We cannot switch off server-to-server measurement for one person. Some events — a completed purchase, for example — are sent from our server straight to the advertising platforms, not only from your browser. We do not have a per-person switch for that today, so we are not going to promise you one. The platform settings in the Cookie Policy limit what those companies may do with what they receive; they do not stop it being sent.
  • We cannot promise you will never see our ads again. We can stop targeting you from your own data. We cannot stop an ad reaching you as part of a broad audience that was never built from it.

7. Marketing emails

Every marketing email we send has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click, no reply needed, and it works whether or not you ever bought anything.

One thing worth knowing: at checkout, the box that says "Email me with news and offers" is ticked by default. If you bought from us and did not clear it, you are on the marketing list without having chosen to be. Use the unsubscribe link, or the email in Section 4, and you are off it.

Order emails are a different thing and they keep coming: your receipt, the report or the link you paid for, and shipping notices. Those are part of the purchase, not marketing.

8. The controls that do not live with us

The strongest controls are the ones inside your browser and inside your account at each platform, because they follow you across sites and devices rather than depending on us. We have put them in one place — browser settings, the Meta, TikTok and Google account settings, the industry opt-out tools and the phone settings, each with a note on what it really does — in the opt-out section of the Cookie Policy.

9. Your other privacy rights

Access, correction, deletion, the right to appeal if we turn a request down, and the state-by-state detail all live in the Privacy Policy. California requires a site to publish a link called "Your Privacy Choices"; this is that page, and the Privacy Policy is where the full set of rights is written out.

One consequence to know before you ask: if we delete your personal information, the access that came with your purchase ends. The private link and the portal at /my-reports/ stop working, because what makes them work is the record we would be deleting. Download your PDF first — that file is yours and stays on your computer either way.

10. What opting out does not change

  • Your reports still work, and the ones you paid for stay yours. Asking us to stop advertising and marketing is not the same as asking us to delete your data — that one is in Section 9.
  • Orders in production are still made and still shipped.
  • You can still write to us and get an answer.
  • Prices do not change, and nothing on this site is withheld from you for opting out.
