As an English and Welsh surname

Bardsley classes it as an occupational name: ‘the bury-man’ — the first of the origins he gives.

An early record he cites: Robert Buryman, Somerset, 1327–28 (1 Edward III) — Kirby's Quest (Somerset).

His entry covers Berryman, Berriman, Borrowman and Berghman.

Among the farmers of England and Wales, 1880s

Berryman was found among the farmers of Cornwall: 34 in every 10,000.

Guppy counted the farmers listed in each county’s directory and recorded a name only where it reached about 7 in every 10,000; where it does not appear, it was rarer than that, not absent.
