As an English and Welsh surname

Bardsley classes it as a baptismal name, from a given name: ‘the son of Dod’ — the first of the origins he gives.

An early record he cites: Willelmus Dogeson, 1379 — Poll Tax, West Riding of Yorkshire.

His entry covers Dodge, Dodgson, Dodgin, Dodging, Dodgon, Dodgshon and Dodgshun.
