The meaning of the Hazel surname

A topographic surname from Middle English for someone who lived near a hazel tree.

As an English and Welsh surname

Bardsley classes it as a local name, from where the family lived: ‘at the hazel’ — the first of the origins he gives.

An early record he cites: Cristiana de Hesill, 1379 — Poll Tax, West Riding of Yorkshire.

His entry covers Hazell, Hazle and Hazel.
