As an English and Welsh surname

Bardsley classes it as a baptismal name, from a given name: ‘the son of Josse or Goce’.

An early record he cites: Robert fil. Jocei, 1291–92 (20 Edward I) — Placita de Quo Warranto. Fil. is Latin for “son of”.

His entry covers Joyce, Joycey, Joysey and Jowsey.

Each birth counts the child’s surname, each marriage both partners’ and each death the surname of the person who died — a yearly count of registrations, not of the people who live in Scotland.
