As an English and Welsh surname

Bardsley classes it as a baptismal name, from a given name: ‘the son of Merick’.

An early record he cites: Henry Meriche, 1379 — Poll Tax, West Riding of Yorkshire.

His entry covers Merrick and Meyrick.
