What the name means
The meaning of the Metcalf surname
Possibly from Old English *metecealf (“meat calf”), a calf to be fattened up for eating. The use as a surname could have started off as a jocular nickname for an individual thought to be as "fat as a prize-calf"; or else in reference to the occupation involved in fattening up such a calf.

Among the farmers of England and Wales, 1880s
Metcalf was found among the farmers of 5 counties.
It was most frequent in Yorkshire, North and East Ridings: 95 in every 10,000 farmers there — about 1 in 105. Guppy counted the farmers listed in each county’s directory and recorded a name only where it reached about 7 in every 10,000; where it does not appear, it was rarer than that, not absent. His list gives one count for the spellings Metcalf and Metcalfe.
