What the name means
The meaning of the Storey surname
Originates from the Old Norse personal epithet “Stóri”, a derivative of “Storr” which means “large” or “big”. Even though it has been established that the root of the name is “Storr”, R.E.K. Rigbeye, in his book The Storey’s of Old claims that the suffix “ey[e]”, in the variant of Storey, is equivalent to the Icelandic “ig” and signifies “water”.

Too few records to say where it concentrates region by region — these are plain counts, not shares.

Among the farmers of England and Wales, 1880s
Storey was found among the farmers of 6 counties.
It was most frequent in Durham: 48 in every 10,000 farmers there — about 1 in 208. Guppy counted the farmers listed in each county’s directory and recorded a name only where it reached about 7 in every 10,000; where it does not appear, it was rarer than that, not absent. His list gives one count for the spellings Storey and Story.

In Scotland’s registers today
Storey was recorded 20 times in Scotland’s registers of births, marriages and deaths in 2025.
That made it the 1147th most common name in those registers, shared with others on the same count. In 1975, the first year of the series, the count was 15. Each birth counts the child’s surname, each marriage both partners’ and each death the surname of the person who died — a yearly count of registrations, not of the people who live in Scotland.
