Materials

Your personalized map is printed at 16 × 20 inches on museum-grade archival paper with rich, fade-resistant inks, so the fine engraved lines, the port miniatures and the red route stay sharp and hold their colour for years. Choose it unframed, or ready to hang in a solid wood, black or white frame behind glass.

Design

Every Passage Map is personalized for one family. The map is drawn in the style of a 19th-century engraved chart — aged parchment, raised relief, hand-lettered seas — and on it we mark the port your family sailed from and the port where they arrived, each with an engraved miniature of the harbour as it looked at the time, joined by the dashed route of the crossing. At the bottom we print your family name, the two ports, and the immigration station of the era.

Research

The route is reconstructed from the documented history of emigration: the principal emigrant port of your family's country of origin, and the port of arrival and immigration station in use in the decade you choose, following official arrival records and the shipping routes of the time. It shows the crossing most families from that country made — it is not drawn from your own family's passenger records, and no specific ship or voyage is implied.

Yes. Every map is personalized and made to order for one family: your family name, your port of departure, your port of arrival and the immigration station of the era are printed on the map. No two are alike.

What do I need to know to order?

Only four things: your family name, the country your family came from, the country where they settled and roughly when they arrived. If you are not sure of the decade, choose “I'm not sure”. You do not need to know the ship, the port or any dates.

What size is it?

The print is 16 × 20 inches. You can order it unframed, or framed in solid wood, black or white, ready to hang.

What is The Crossing Story?

A personalized PDF sent to your email that tells the journey in depth — why families left, the departure, life on board, the arrival and the first years. It is included free with every order. The framed print ships to your door; the story is digital.

Is this my family's exact route and ship?

The map shows the route most families from your country of origin took to your country of arrival in that era, reconstructed from the documented history of emigration. It is not drawn from your own family's passenger records, so it does not name a specific ship or voyage.

What if my family arrived at a different port?

The map uses the principal port of arrival of each country in that era (for example New York for the United States). If you know your family landed elsewhere, write to us right after ordering and we will check whether we can prepare it for that port.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes — we ship worldwide. Production time is typically 7–10 business days, plus shipping time depending on your location.

Can I check the details before it is printed?

Your map is personalized with the exact family name you type, so please check the spelling before you pay. If you spot a mistake, email us right away — there is a short window after purchase while a personalized order can still be corrected.
