As an English and Welsh surname

Bardsley classes it as a local name, from where the family lived: ‘at the bake-house’.

An early record he cites: Willian atte Bakehous, Somerset, 1327–28 (1 Edward III) — Kirby's Quest (Somerset).

His entry covers Backhouse, Bacchus and Backus.
